| Whatever your opinion on the war in Iraq, there are men and women, far from home and family, serving our nation. In honor of Memorial Day, Trellis and our non-profit charity Stone Soup Collective are hosting an event which will be educational, fun, and an opportunity to support our soldiers. We will screen David Block's documentary "Abandoned Heroes" on Sunday May 31, 3pm, at Trellis. "Abandoned Heroes" is a 30-minute documentary about the treatment of Gulf war veterans by the government. After the film there will be a discussion led by David, an extraordinary blind film-maker who, against all odds, has produced three popular documentary films and is also a prolific writer and journalist. See his website http://www.blindfilmmaker.com/. Following the film and discussion, there will be an "Adopt-A-Soldier" care package and letter writing party. Items will be available to create care packages for soldiers and write a personal letter. Feel free to bring additional items to add to the care packages from your home, such as recent magazines, religious literature - i.e. Bible, Book of Mormon, Koran, non-perishable snacks,, paperback books, DVDs, CDs, etc. Instructions will be provided for how to pack your care package and a list of soldiers, male and female, will be available for you to choose from. There will be no charge for the items for the care packages; they have been purchased or donated previously for this purpose. There is a suggested donation of $5-$25 for the film, discussion, and "Adopt -A-Soldier" care package and letter writing party. Proceeds will be split between David (to help pay off the debts he incurred in making the film), and the cost of postage to Iraq.
